For the 15th anniversary of Belgian importer The Nectar, a lot of new bottlings were presented at their top festival Spirits in the Sky. This is one of them, from a closed distillery to boot. This Caperdonich was distilled in 2000 and bottled at cask strength in 2021 by Signatory.

Ah... how delicious Caper can be on the nose! Tropical fruits such as banana, apricot and kiwi, but also quince and litchi. Nice and waxy too. Also something floral. Ferns? And some honey and mint. This is very good.

On the palate it is initially very spicy – think ginger and pepper – and the floral element starts to dominate for a while and even flirts with perfume, but it recovers nicely. The tropical fruit returns, but the oak now also makes itself heard a lot more, making it a bit drier.

The finish is really the apotheosis: long, sweet with a soft bitterness and some mint on the deathbed.

Very nice Caperdonich, again. A bottle will cost you about 400 EUR, but it is also liquid history, I say.
