Gold

A veteran whisky lover. Who felt he must go and pay homage to nine or so distilleries in Islay...and guess what, this is exactly what we did, with good friends, in April 2012. Now with a taste for distilleries I visited Gavle in Sweden (Mackmyra) in May 2012, and also went to the pearl of the Orosund - the island of Hven, also in Sweden, just recently (Sept 2012). Tried many things there including Urania, Spirit of Hven.

Location: London

Favourite whisky(s): Laphroaig 25 year old cask strength, and a few others...

Superb. Complex. Alcohol noticeable on the unreduced nose. Figs, toffee, caramel, honey and Madeira wine. Oily and complex. 18 yo not sure but Bourbon style finish.

So, whisky of the year 2012. A bold claim and statement. First of all, available for £50 only in Glasgow - a steal (well, it is Glasgow after all). The whisky is certainly excellent. It is rich and very… read more
