Dewar's & Sons, who own the Aberfeldy Distillery, decided to overhaul the core range of this Highlander. There is already a new 12 and 21 Year Old, but towards the holiday season at the end of the year a 30 Year Old should make its appearance as well. We keep it a little more modest with this 18 Year Old from 1995, bottled by Gordon & Macphail. It is a marriage of three casks.

The nose is quite light on caramelized apples and a single slice of grapefruit, sprinkled with icing sugar. A truckload of sweet malt and some breakfast cereals. Some caramel (actually a lot) and some wild flowers. This is quite pleasant, in fact.

Hmm, wonderfully mouthcoating. Very creamy and powerful. Peppery, though. Truckload of honey, some apples – cider! – and again quite a bit of grapefruit. A few sultanas and a hint of peach are the only flavours that point towards the sherry casks in my opinion.

Some tannins appear in the long, warm finish, making it die a slightly bitter death.

Fine Aberfeldy, nicely fruity with a sturdy palate. Great mouthfeel.
