This bottle was left over from a party I had once (I think it belonged to @Nozinan but I can't quite be sure), so I don't know how long it has been open. It's one of the 3 single cask LCBO exclusives that Amrut released. I don't think they sold that well (they kept discounting them) so I don't know if they'll ever do that again...

This is distilled from unpeated Indian barley and filled a virgin American oak cask in June 2009. At some point it was finished in an ex-bourbon cask (#3443) and bottled January 2014. During that time, 40.89% of the distillate was lost to evaporation, yielding only 168 bottles.

The colour is a full gold. On the nose there is cinnamon, nutmeg, dark honey, vanilla and papaya. There is also a light toffee in the background, balancing out the fruit and spice. Slight hint of sourdough, and a little minty. A little maltier with water, but it's really not necessary. Quite rich and satisfying.

On the palate there is more caramel and vanilla, but with cooking spices (cumin, coriander seed, paprika), soft oak and thick honey. The ABV seems less than 60%! Water helps bring it all together. Very creamy, almost syrupy - you really get the bourbon oak influence here.

The finish is oakier, with much more spice and a nice mouth drying quality. This is another fantastic Amrut; I prefer it to the sherry cask LCBO release (though I can't remember what score I gave that one, so who knows). These have all but vanished from the marketplace here (don't expect to even find these at auction). A very nice, rich, meal-of-a-dram.

As much as I'd like to take credit that wasn't my bottle. Mine was from cask 3444.

The LCBO released a series of Amrut single cask bottlings just under 2 years ago (because one single cask would not generate enough bottles for the province). All the bourbon casks were bottles at 60% so likely not quite CS and standardized for marketing purposes. You're right that they didn't sell that well...at $127! When the LCBO lowered the price to $74.75 ($64.60 for the Sherry cask version) they flew off the shelves. The last 4 were sold in the winter for about $40 each. I spent time chasing them online without success).

From your tasting notes it's hard to tell if the profile of that cask is close to the one my bottle came from. But I was extremely impressed with my own and even if yours was 2/3 as good it was worth the price. I have a 3443 waiting and after your review, I'm looking forward to it.

I agree that these particular bottles are long gone, and mine are for drinking (and sharing), not selling, but if Amrut continues to produce and bottle stuff like this, I hope we'll see some more single cask bottlings in the future.

I did manage to get 1 of the discounted bottles (one of the very last) at the LCBO, wish I had picked up at least 1 backup. Still sitting on about 1/2 a bottle. I really like this one and yes a little water works well.Tropical fruit for sure.

@Astroke - I agree with your assessment. What do you say we set up a time for the three of us to try the Sherry cask version? It was my favourite of the two at the SOT 2014 Masterclass, but I have to admit the Bourbon cask exceeded my expectations when I had it at home.

@Nozinan @Astroke I'm down for that! Oh, except my bottle is now gone (it had two drams left in it when it was abandoned in my house, and I kinda drank them...)

@TAlexander I know a guy who has bottle of each (bourbon and sherry) in his possession, with the seals still intact...

@Nozinan, sounds like a good opportunity for a side-by-side....

I never tried the Sherry Cask, although I have 2 Intermediate Sherry's waiting for me in Nova Scotia. Would enjoy a sit down SbS, although it requires much logistics at my end...

Great review, I have a bottle of 3448 opened and its very similar to your description of this cask. 3448 was only 126 bottles, Ive got one open and one sealed, as well as sealed bottles from 3442 (162 bottles) and 3447 (150 bottles). Happy to share, so you'll definitely be able to taste this one again!

So ot looks so far like there were at least 5 single casks - 3442, 3443, 3444, 3447, 3448. Anyone have any others?

There must be a 3446 somewhere out there - unless the LCBO has it in their office kitchen next to the water cooler.

As long as it's not next to the furnace...

Not likely - they're probably drinking it with ice. And Coke.

I've got 3445 ,don't know what's happened to 3446?

Given that the LCBO bottlings were "exclusives", I would think 3445 and possibly 3446 probably went elsewhere.

Didn't realize there were so many casks! I have two bottles of cask #2696 which yielded 120 bottles (plus one of #3443)

@talexander, "...and I kinda drank them..." is a pretty common story around here.

That # 3443 must have been one of the whiskies which you, @Nozinan and I tried at the Amrut 2014 Spirit of Toronto Masterclass. All of them were either very good or great in my book. At the time I thought "Great whiskies, but those LCBO prices are off he wall." Nice to hear that many of the bottles were eventually discounted and sold for what sounds like decent and reasonable prices.

@Victor, we tried #3448 at the Collingwood Summit in 2015, courtesy of @WiskyJoe, who was not a big fan of this particular bottle. He was very fond of CC 20 YO 2011, so we did what Summit Goers do best, we traded bottles. @Nozinan (thank you) picked up a $75 bottle of #3444 for me, and I managed to snag one more at that discounted price, #3443. There is no shortage in our circle. I'm down for an Amrut session.
