This single cask of Amrut, which contains very young whisky (but in the Indian climate, that means little when applied to maturation), is a single malt that is produced from unpeated barley. Only 161 bottles were filled, exclusively for the European market. It was distilled in June 2009 and bottled in September 2013. Like I said: a young animal.

The nose may be sweet, but a bit odd. Reminds me of baklava, which puts us in the wrong country, so to speak. Also weird, but not bad to be sure, spiciness on curry. Rather vegetal, by the way. Some figs and a leaf of mint. It gets a bit better with some water. That surpresses the spiciness somewhat and puts the pastry more to the fore.

It is creamy and round with a malty heart. Again loads of spices around it, all of them exotic and peppery. A bit more fruit now, with citrus in the lead, followed by some apricots. Mildly drying as if from black tea that stood too long. Woodsmoke. Diluting is not a good idea, though. It turns bitter and loses some of its sweetness.

In the sweet finish I get apricots again, albeit the dried variety.

Pleasant, certainly, but a tad too weird to my taste and not a swimmer at all. Having said that, being able to buy a single cask of Indian malt for less than 60 EUR is not a bad deal.
