Ardmore was founded by Adam Teacher, the son of the creator of the famous blend. Hence it is no surprise that Ardmore is still a very important component of this blend. Ardmore produces a peated whisky with a level of around 12 to 14 ppm. The produce no less than 5 million liters per annum, but only a small part is sold as single malt. This ‘Mellow Mariner’ was bottled in 20012 by Wemyss. So far I have not yet tried any Ardmore that I thought was great, so I am very much looking forward to this one.
It is surprisingly sweet with just a bit of peat in the back. Sweet malt and some lemon. A hint of oyster sap. Clear hints of almonds shavings. Vanilla and some earthy notes, even some butane gas. Clean and crispy. Great nose!
On the palate it first reminds me of soot and fish oil, followed instantly by a slice of lemon and some Granny Smith apples. Grapefruit and rhubarb kick in. Some mocha? And then suddenly a salty edge. Oh, yes, this is very nice!
The finish lasts forever and develops a nice trace of smoke.
Great from start to finish. Around 90 EUR. Recommended, although I would not be able to say where you can still find it.
