I have tried quite a few early 90s Ardmore and must say it is a whisky that is right up my alley. But this Ardmore 1991 from Malts of Scotalnd is a bit different, for it matured for 22 years on a rum barrel. Hmm, wonder where we will end up this time.

Up front on the nose I get wet jute, stable scents, freshly cut grass, flints and soft peat. Then a whole basket of sweet and sout fruit and agrum pass me by. Mandarin, gooseberry, lime, grapefruit. Some Granny Smith apples as well. Light caramel. Hints of almonds. Subtle touch of soot and mint. Fresh is the word.

Powerful attack, spicy sweet and mouth coating. A little course, as if I have actual soot in the mouth. Very pleasant and full. As for the fruit, I am reaching in the same basket as on the nose. Garden herbs and white pepper. Soft bitterness.

The long finish puts the agrum in the spotlight once more and dies a sweet, spicy death.

The rum barrel seems to have made this Ardmore a little sweeter than what I am used to. But it works wonderfully. Good stuff! Around 100 EUR.

As you know Mark, I was doing some searching for MoS bottles today. This bottle got my interest, because I really like the special peaty style (no peatsmoke, bbq, medicine or anything - but more the earthy tones) of Ardmore TC. And this MoS release was matured 100% in rum casks... very special. But the notes I found (Serge, Ruben and Yours) are surprising me. Seems to have no or very little rum influence and the peat/earth is also missing?

The rum influence seems very subdued indeed. And indeed, the peaty/earty notes are very soft. Nevertheless, I found this to be a fine dram, as you can see.
