When The Nectar, one of the leading bottlers in Belgium, celebrated their 5th birthday, they bottled a couple of malts, including this 5 Year Old Arran. It was distilled on 12 December 2005 and bottled on 17 August 2011. The bourbon cask yielded 254 bottles.

The nose is massively herbal and a touch farmy. Freshly cut grass, hay, heather, lavender and even a bit of coriander. Then mostly citrus and a bit of apples, skin included. It has a dusty side too, as if from wood shavings. Bit of toasted oak and vanilla. Very nice.

On the palate I get loads of spices and a surprisingly large amount of peat. Very piquant, but also quite alcoholic. Adding water makes it very fruity, allowing the peat to disappear slowly into the background. Citrus, sweet honey, light oak. Nice balance.

In the finish it remains feisty, discretely peaty and warming.

Good without, but great with water. A daring, peaty, beauty of an Arran!
