Auchentoshan 1987 17 Year Old Sherry

This was one of the first Auchentoshan I ever tried and I must admit that I found it a little too hot to handle at the time and thus did not really appreciate it. But that was many, many years ago. And yet I never went back to it. Fast forward to 2017 and the bottle is handed to me as a birthday gift by friends. I opened it immediately and poured a generous dram. And never looked back.

What a beautiful, layered nose with what I call deep sherry. Cherries, mocha, espresso, chocolate. Very sweet on dark caramel, but also very fruity and not an off-note for miles around. Delicious.

It comes as no surprise that this one burns a bit at first, but once it has settled down on your tongue, you will be rewarded with the spicy notes of black pepper, nutmeg and cloves, which is immediately joined by tangerine, grapefruit, blueberries. Toffee appears. Simply marvelous!

The finish is very long, soft and simply grand. It remains quite spicy till the last.

A wonderful, sexy Auchentoshan that I was unable to appreciate at first, simply for the lack of experience. Now, almost 10 years and 2500 whiskies later, I know better. Much better. This has become one of my favorite Auchentoshan, but alas the bottle is almost empty again…

It's no big secret that I'm a fan (and starting collector) of this Lowland whisky. Auchentoshan usually releases very soft, utterly drinkable dram in beautiful packaging (at least since 2008, imho). During the whisky festival in Ghent, I tried this particular expression.

This Toshan is anything but utterly drinkable. Even after adding some water, it's a tough one. I'm sure it's a special expression requiring a quiet setting to savour it with patience. I was not in that kind of place at that time. Hopefully I'll be able to try it again sometime soon. After all, this cannot be anything but great whisky, right?

The sherry dominates the nose, with touches of rubber, paint and coffee beans upon second and third tries. You have to get past the alcohol first. It also has some sweetness to it, in fact.

This is simply too hot to drink without dilluting it a bit. When you do, you'll taste citric fruits (I'm reminded of grapefruit and oranges), wood and walnuts. Some caramel too.

The finish is somewhat salty and bitter, but very very very long.

I think 110 EUR a bottle is a little steep. And it may sound almost like blasphemy, but this was my least successful encounter with Toshan so far. While I consider the other expressions as lovely nieces so far, this must be the stern aunt.

Aunty Toshen! Classic....

No, the Classic is here : connosr.com/reviews/auchentoshan/… and would be described as the youngest niece (but I know that's not what you meant) :-)
