This is one of those combinations: peated BenRiach with a wood finish – in this case Oloroso sherry. It was put to sleep in 1984 and awakened in a bottle in June 2006 at the age of 21. The difference with the Heredotus Fumosus is that this is a single cask at cask strength. Only 658 bottles were filled.

The nose starts very aggressively with powerful peat. It takes a while for the other scents to struggle past the peat. I get some citrus fruit and vanilla, a bit of tea and rubber. It can be compared to the aforementioned Heredotus Fumosus, but this one has a lot more depth to it.

The alcohol makes for a peppery attack, but the drying sherry clearly makes a statement here. I have some earthy notes as well, something like moss. The citrus peeks around the corner, but less prominent as on the nose.

The finish is dry, with loads of spice and oak. It lasts forever, but does get a tad bitter at the death.

This is a truly powerful BenRiach that doesn’t need water.
