This 17 Year Old Speysider was launched in 2010, together with the Rioja and Claret Wood finishes. It matured on bourbon oak barrels and got a finish in Burgundy casks, well known wine from France like the red Pinot Noir or the white Chardonnay.
On the nose, I get summer berries, strawberries, roasted almonds and humus. Even a heavy trace of smoke. Underneath I get quite some vanilla, but the oak cask is definitely overpowered by the wine cask.
On the palate, this is fruity and picquant. Midpalate, however, it becomes somewhat winey and bitter. Towards the end, it turns sweet again. Think crème brulée.
The finish is short to medium, but surprisingly sour.
I have heard a lot of good things about this BenRiach, but to me it is rather underwhelming.

My general impression is that within the whisky world most red wine finished whiskies are to be approached with caution, if not outright avoided, particularly since the red wine contents seem to usually dominate the whisky. Can people provide some examples of 'red wine' whiskies that are generally well regarded? Thanks!
