This is the oldest Benromach I have tried to date and of course from an era that the distillery was not yet in the hands of Gordon & Macphail (because they only took ownership in 1993). It has a wonderful color, thanks to its beauty sleep on refill sherry hogsheads. I am always very curious to whisky that was distilled before my birth.

The sweet, creamy nose is a wonderful mix of all sorts of spices. Walnuts, aniseed, soya sauce and old sherry. Parma ham? Some earth, too. Menthol. The sweetness translates into chocolate, fresh plums and coffee. And it has a clear, although discrete, tracé of peat. Boy, this is very good!

I had expected it to be creamier on the palate. This is rather light. But taste wise there is no reason for complaints. Dark chocolate with mint – After Eight! – raisins and leather. A bit of black pepper. Very sweet and rather drying.

The finish is medium in length, soft and warm.

Ah, a very good whisky. I do like my sherrymonsters. Well, this is not a monster per se, but a beast at least. If you want a bottle of this, you will need to cough up more than 450 EUR. Hence I am very grateful to my friend Jan VC for the sample.
