In the Cask Strength Collection, Signatory from Pitlochry bottles single casks at cask strength. In this case I will try a Blair Athol from 1989, that still retains an ABV of 50% after 22 long years on a hogshead. The cask yielded 370 bottles that each fetched around 90 EUR.

Hmm, this is an interesting nose. Despite the high ABV it does not burn, but offers the classic apples, pears and berries as well as some rotting oranges – something that does not always work, but with this Blair Athol it does. Clear hints of scorched oak, giving it a certain depth. I quite like it.

It is powerful on the palate. Malty, nutty and with all the fruit from the nose, while the oak, nutmeg and some pepper do their best to nip that in the bud. Luckily, they do not succeed, making this still a nicely fruity malt. A trace of woodsmoke gives it an unexpected depth. Midpalate, however, the oak becomes quite loud and gives it a bitter edge.

The bitterness continues in the medium long finish. Almonds at the death.

Interesting Blair Athol with a twist. For that alone, it can count on my sympathy.
