Gordon & Macphail bottles young whisky under their ‘Secret Stills’ label, although the secret is out. Still no 4 is Bowmore. This is already their 16th Bowmore under this label, bottled at the very accessible strength of 45% ABV. It is a vatting of bourbon barrels 32813 and 32814, that yielded 590 bottles.

The nose reveals classic coastal elements first, iodine and seaweeds, but also contains a good helping of vanilla and citrus. Wet stones and a bit of peat smoke. Very easy and straightforward, much like the recently bottled Bowmore 14 Year Old for MacBolle. Accessible.

On the palate, however, it is very sharp and bitter. White pepper, lemon syrup (like the one you can use to create your own lemonade), peat as it should be, but also a lot (too much) oak. Very spicy. Could this have been virgin oak? A lot of tannins and acids and a big spoonful of brine.

The finish is medium in length on citrus and oak.

This is a sharp Bowmore with no finesse. Pity. Not even 35 EUR for a bottle, but I would prefer to spend that on something else.
