I picked up this bottle during my Christmas Holidays in New York (and paid way too much for it, it would seem). A local product, because the distillery can be found in Brooklyn (which is derived from Breukelen, referring to the Dutch immigrants way back when). Their 77 Wheat Whiskey is distilled from locally grown barley. The 77 refers to the house number in 19th Street where the distillery is located. They bottle more or less what they feel like and then put the age on the label. My bottle proudly proclaims ‘427 days old’.

The nose is soft on blueberries, butter, butterscotch and brown sugar. By the Maker, that’s a lot of B’s! Honeysweet and a bit spicy. Reminds me also a bit of buttered brown toast. A light floral element.

The body is between oily and syrupy. It even tastes a bit like syrup. Maple syrup to be precise. Plums, raisins, some coffee liqueur. Corn on the barbecue. But there is absolutely no bit. In that regards, it is similar to Bernheim Original, another wheat whiskey.

The finish is medium long, soft and drying.

I know only a few people who have tried it and nobody found it particularly grand. Looks like I am the exception. Oh, well, would not be the first time. Recommended! It was for sale at the distillery for $52,but I got it in a liquor store in Manhattan’s Grand Central Terminal for $79. Rip off! Oh well, in Europe you will still have to pay 75 EUR.
