I was recently visited by James, an American military man stationed in Germany with the US Air Force. He wanted to offer me two bottles of Auchentoshan in trade for two of my older Bushmills. He collects the soft Irish whiskey, something I understand completely. After a wonderful night I which I offered him some good stuff (including the Auchentohan 30 Year Old 1976), he returned to base, but not after offering me a generous sample of his Bushmills Millennium Malt.

The nose is subtle on vanilla and honey, with an underlying layer of light citrus and nuts. Nougat. Also some dried apricots and sweet malt. Peaches, maybe? Almond shavings.

Soft and sweet attack with a very mild spiciness. Well, maybe not so mild. Becomes quite punchy after a few moments with a nice trace of oak that gives it a depth that you would not have anticipated after the soft nose. Caramel and dried fruit. Nice!

The creamy finish is surprisingly long on allspice.

What a great Bushmills! Pity that it has become so expensive nowadays or I might have been tempted to get me a bottle of this good stuff. Thanks a bunch, James!
