Clynelish 15 Year Old 1995 The Nectar of the Daily Drams

The Nectar, a Belgian bottler with a very strong reputation with regards to cask selection, bottled this Clynelish 1995 for the German market, albeit some 5 years ago. I sometimes get the question why I still review bottles that have been around for so long and are often no longer available. Well… because I feel like it and because I like them. What more reason do I need?

A truckload of vanilla precedes mostly white fruit and candied lemon on this rather creamy nose. Freshly cut grass, flints, a bittersweet touch of grapefruit. And finally a mildly salty element. Textbook bourbon matured Clynelish, if you ask me.

The arrival is powerful, spicy but most of all surprisingly bitter, but in a good way. The fruit and vanilla are present on the palate, surely, but now the grass and mostly the oak do all the work. The saltiness is big too. Very outspoken Clynelish on the palate, which deviates a bit from the style. Not so textbook after all, eh?

In the long and warm finish the citrusy notes reappear: lemon and grapefruit.

Powerful Clynelish that clearly slept on an active cask. Loads of punch, loads of spices and loads of wood, but all in a good way. Great stuff.
