Tasting Notes by markjedi1

Under impulse of Mark Watt, Cadenhead launched the so-called Small Batch series in 2013. A few classics have already been released: Banff 1978, Caol Ila 1984, Fettercairn 1993, Glenlivet 1970, Glenrothes 1989, Highland Park 1988, Longmorn 1987 and Macduff 1989 to name but a few. Today we will be trying a golden oldie, a Convalmore 1977, no less than 36 years old. I am somewhat surprised that the ABV is still so high. I wonder if it was casked at a higher strength than the industry standard of 63,5%.

Ooh, this is a nice nose, although unexpectedly sharp. Milkchocolate with vanilla filling is the first thing I smell, followed by green banana, maple syrup and coconut. It is a bit bourbonny, if you know what I mean. But add a teaspoon of water and it will turn into a fruit bomb like Caperdonich from the same era. Icing sugar. Something of moldy would (very nice), giving away the age. Great!

Bam! I just lost two teeth. What a kicker! Very spicy and even waxy. Mostly on coconut, oranges and some nuts. Very creamy indeed. Mouth coating. Diluted, I get a fruitbasket with lime and starfruit in the lead. De spices become a little sharper. White pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg.

The finish is fairly long, spicy, but dry.

Great nose, followed by a good palate and finish. Nuff said. Just under 300 EUR, but it is hard to find already.
