This is my first Fettercairn so its quite exciting. I love to try new Whiskies. The distillery is owned by Mackay & White which in turn is owned by Indian businessman Vijay Mallaya. The group also includes Jura and Dalmore so Fettercairn is in good company.

Matured in bourbon barrel (419) for 18 yrs this Highland Single Malt is a cask strength monster. Sold by Signatory it was bottled distilled March '95 and bottled October '13.

Golden straw in the glass with long legs. The nose delivers vanilla, oak, grass, vegetation, honey and pears. Rich and smooth, creamy yet big. Spiced oak, green apples, grassy, honey and green grape skin

The finish is drying, spiced and slightly bitter.

It is another worthy dram that is one for tasting session rather than one to drink in good company.

@tjb, thanks for a very interesting review. Could you comment a little more on WHICH of the elements of this whisky which you like, and which fell short? It is hard to discern that when the grade given is an overall grade only, and not broken down to the parts.

@victor good point. The nose is welcoming and sweet. It has several layers and is soft. It's the palate that has a clash of flavours. Soft creamy malt but it turns into a sharp, slightly bitter and drying. It starts well but tails off. If you add a lot of water it makes the nose less welcoming but the middle and finish better but it is not a major improvement. It is the kind of whisky you could delve into and each time find variation but it is not an easy drinker. My score reflects that I feel there is an imbalance in the palate, it has so much potential but misses the mark the most on balance.
