Fighting Cock 103 proof 6 yr old bourbon is distributed by Heaven Hill. It is a high rye content mashbill-- my estimate 27% rye. Before I first tasted this one I wasn't sure if this was a serious brand. It definitely is.

Nose: Rich corn syrup, vanilla, cloves, pepper, nutmeg, oak. This is one of the strongest and most pleasant noses I have encountered in a bourbon.

Taste: Intense rye spice, vanilla, caramel, oak, alcohol. Tasted neat the flavours are strong but a little tucked away. This whiskey explodes with flavour with the addition of a couple of drops of water. I almost never like to add water to whisk(e)y, but this is a dramatic change that needs to be observed.

Finish: The spices stay a medium length while vanilla, caramel, and oak remain long.

Balance: This is a very solid and enjoyable reasonably priced high rye bourbon. If you like bourbons like Bulleit, Old Grand-Dad, or Elmer T. Lee, you will probably also like this. The whiskey is good and flavourful. The name and the bottle art are just nice bonuses.

Great review! I've been curious about Fighting Cock for some time. Admittedly, though, I'm not a Bulleit fan—despite liking my ryes and ryed bourbons—so I'm not certain how I'll find this one either.
