The Girvan Distillery can be found in the Lowlands and is owned by William Grants & Sons, better known as the company behind Glenfiddich. The production is destined for the blends of the company, but independent bottlers often are able to put their hands on nicely matured casks, such as this very pale Girvan 1979, no less than 33 years old, marketed by Cadenhead.

The first whiff is somewhat chemical (no surprise), but becomes fruity sweet immediately. Think unripe banana and coconut. Add some white chocolate. Vanilla. Touch of oak. Think warm wood shavings or freshly sawed planks. Becomes sweeter with time. Very pleasant.

The arrival is slightly creamy and spicy. Liquorice and a mild saltiness emerge. Not as sweet as I would have expected. The banana trades places with pineapple.

Long, spicy finish with loads of oak and a salty lining.

This is a rather salty grain, something you do not see every day. Around 220 EUR, but not easy to find anymore.
