Glen Elgin lies about 3 kilometers south of Elgin, close to Longmorn. There are not a lot of official bottlings, but this 12 Year Old is their entry level malt. It recently replaced Cragganmore in Diageo’s Classic Malt series, representing Speyside.

The nose is pleasantly buttery. Let us call it butterscotch. Underneath some raisins and loads of honey. Vanilla coffe, the one you can get at Starbuck’s. Just a tad too sweet. Hazelnuts and almonds. Quite nice.

On the palate, though, it is somewhat light. Mostly the coffee returns, followed by some sweet malt, spices and caramel. Fairly little fruit, all of it European.

Mildly drying finish on more of the same, but rather dry.

The nose was very good, but on the palate and certainly in the finish, it shows why this is considered to be entry level.
