Glen Marnoch is a single malt from an undisclosed distillery, sold through the discount chain of Aldi (albeit not in Belgium). There is a 12, 18 and 24 Year Old, but it is not at all certain that all three expressions come from the same distillery. I have been told that the 18 Year Old is actually a Dalmore.

The nose is sweet & sour, but also fruity. The first whiff even brings to mind a peated whisky, albeit lightly peated, but still. I get some wet earth, ferns and a mild sour note. After a few moments some sugared orange peel, sultanas and strawberries. A hint of milk chocolate with blueberries. A touch of caramel. Some sawdust. This nose is quite pleasant.

The body is light and mildly spicy, although more so than on the nose. The fruit arrives first, followed by some spices from the wood. Cinnamon, pepper and a hint of nutmeg. The fruit is now somewhat juicy, like rum raisins. And again that herbal element appears, giving it a mildly sour, almost salty edge. It also becomes a little dry. This is rather nice too.

The finish is not overly long, but not short either. It leaves the mouth completely dry after the oranges and a hint of toffee had faded away. At the death I get some more tannins.

Well, I would not be my life of the fact that this is Dalmore. It seems to me it is a little too spicy and herbal. But good? Oh, yes, most certainly. Thanks, Jan.

They are not bad for their price, but not good for their age. If it took 18 years to accomplish that it was probably a waste of time, space and resources. As for the origin, that's why I stay away from bastard malt, it drives me mad not knowing what I have just tasted.
