Glen Scotia 1991 'Strawberry Ganache' Wemyss

Glen Scotia is one of three still operating distilleries in Campbeltown – once the heart of the whisky industry. Currently owned by Loch Lomond, who only put her to market as a 12 year Old, but independent releases are plentiful. Wemyss, the independent bottler that recently opened the Kingsbarns Distillery, released two similar Glen Scotia from 1991. They are named ‘Strawberry Ganache’ and ‘Merchant’s Mahogany Chest’. We put them head to head, starting with the Strawberry Ganache.

It was clearly a very active sherry cask, for the nose bursts with jam. Of dark fruits, to be quite clear. Think strawberry (hence the name), raisins, plums and candied oranges. The second whiff offers something green and mildly sour, but I cannot quite pinpoint it. Let us call it a drop of balsamico and garden herbs. A rubber touch in the background, but far from disturbing.

It is quite oily and round. Loads of origin chocolate and red wine. Tobacco, green pepper, orange liqueur. A nice salty touch as well. But no trace of the aforementioned strawberries on the palate.

The finish is quite long with a return of the dark fruit.

Very pleasant Glen Scotia with quite some cask influence. A touch to much wine to my taste, but apart from that very nice.
