Nose: sweet. Vanilla and lemon buttercream icing. A tad thin and insubstantial but pleasant nonetheless.

Taste: light-bodied on the tongue, starting off sweet but becoming bitter a little too fast. Something soapy going on here as well.

Finish: bitter, medicinal.

Balance: as you can see from the scores, this whisky gets less enjoyable as you go along. I actually expected to score it a little higher than this but it just didn't stand up to critical analysis. I also don't buy the line that this shouldn't be compared to their 12 year old bottling since it is intended for a "different purpose". For an entry-level Speyside malt you can do a lot better. Try Glenfiddich 12.

@Megawatt, thanks for your review. 'Soapy' is never a good thing, in my book. It doesn't look like there is any reason to want to own any of this Glenlivet Founders' Reserve.

"Intended for a different purpose" can mean cocktail mixing. They have to do something profitable with their lesser barrels. Usually in Scotland that means going into blended Scotch. Sometiems it means putting out an unusual taste profile malt. If you buy something which you don't want to sip neat, the logical response is to consider what it would mix well with.

I tried this this year. The 12 is drinkable, a good intro malt.

This one is no 12.
