Glenlochy 30 Year Old 1963 Signatory Vintage

This is truly a golden oldie: a Glenlochy (closed since 1983) from Signatory Vintage, bottled in the typical dumpy from two decades ago. The distillate dates back to 1963, the year in which Copenhagen’s Little Mermaid statue got decapitated, Profumo had to resign because of his affair with call-girl Christine Keeler, the Great Train Robbery took place and John F Kennedy got shot – to name but a few things.

I will leave it for a few minutes as the nose starts of pretty closed. Patience brings nice notes of nuts, marzipan, nougat and dark, candied fruit. Think figs and apricots. Elegant. And a little dusty, if you know what I mean. Hint of sweet espresso with whipped cream. Milk chocolate. This is a complex animal.

Oily and very rich on the palate. The spices speak up (nutmeg, cloves, ginger), followed by figs, plums and some honey. Hint of mint. Loads of liquorice. Great.

The finish is long and spicy, a bit drying with a hint of smoke.
