This is the first Glenrothes to be bottled by the Dutch label Archives. It was distilled on 6 June 1988 and bottled on 4 January 2012. It is very pale, indicating a rather inactive ex sherry cask.
The nose is immediately very sweet. Clear hint of white chocolate. Caramelized white fruit (like the red coating apples you buy at fancy fairs). Mandarin and lime. Wild flowers. Mild on the spice front. Indeed, only a minor influence of the sherry cask on the nose. Hints of mashed patatoes. Light and accessible, despite the high ABV.
Nice and creamy in the mouth. The mild spices now explode in a handful of pepper and ginger. Again very sweet on white fruit and mandarins. Apple sauce. Sugared breakfast cereals. Turns slightly bitter towards the end.
The finish is long, but the bitterness comes dangerously close to being over the top.
A nice allround Speysider, but nothing spectacular. Just under 85 EUR in the Whiskybase Shop.
