The Macphail's Collection is a series of young, but very affordable single malts. At the Whisky Festival for Independent Bottlers, I was able to score quite a few, including this Glenrothes. It is only 8 years old.

A nose full of nuts, yellow and orange stone fruit, oats, honey, cake with a bit of thyme and rosemary. Also a bit of earth and something that reminds me of a wooden box for cigarillos that used to lie on grandma’s kitchen table. Some white chocolate as well.

Soft, but slightly bitter arrival on the palate. The fruit evolves towards oranges and grapefruit. Some more spices than on the nose, but with regards to taste development, this is rather weak, to be honest. Some wood shavings emerge, but no trace of the chocolate that I had on the nose.

The finish is medium long and spicy.

This is a lightweight dram for a sunny afternoon in the garden. Young, but cheap, because it has the price tag of a middle-of-the-road blend (but that seems fair as this is not much better than middle-of-the-road either).
