Founded 1897. Mothballed 1985 – 1989. Malts from this distillery are rarely bottled as they are used primarily in blends. The first official bottling was launched 2000 and this bottle is a semi-official (distillery label) release by Gordon & MacPhail. This was distilled 1994 and bottled 2014.

This is amber gold in colour and the nose is big. Dark fruits, heavy with fudge and caramel. Very malty with a sherry undertone. Vanilla is there too.

Mouth feel is soft and sweet. White pepper, sweet oak, sherry with a hint of smoke. Malty and delicious.

The finish is medium with a soft and sweet peppery finish.

Why would a distillery that makes such good single malt sell most of it for blends? Surely they would make more money and build brand awareness. This is a distillery labelled IB so maybe that is what their plan is. Either way, its good and I would definitely look for more from these guys. For a 20 year old is has complexity and maturing without being over-powered by oak.

I forgot to mention, Jim Murray rated this 96.5 in his 2015 bible. I am sure he has a complicated system to determine scores. I rate them by how much i like them at the time I drink them. Either way, this is a banging bottle and for £50 and 20Yr old it is superb value.
