Tasting Notes by Pandemonium

Following the quest to try as much of every lost distillery before they waste away for good, I opened one of three Glenury Royal samples/miniatures that I still have in my possession. To me this Stonehaven distillery was just as fascinating in style as its brothers and sisters on the East Coast. Let’s see why this distillery earned the royal suffix.

Description: one of three 20yo 2008/2001 releases of Italian bottler Silver Seal, the Single Barrel edition matured in a sherry cask bottled at 50.0% ABV

Nose: rich, old and gracious. The aroma of antiquated wood, like a rustic mahogany desk, with a touch of wasabi and basil.

Mouth: a rich round body with a wonderful complexness to it in combination with lovely bitterness in the mouth (by now you can probably tell that I really like this) Heavy on the wooden tones with rough grind black pepper, soot and orange peel marmalade on the palate

Finish: long and fiery, main notes of cloves and pepper

Verdict: One has to wonder what could have been if they were still around today, would they have accepted a more bland commercial style or would they have continued to produce these maverick drinks? Such a beautiful dram, such a work of art and passion. Damn, another one gone, now all that is left are some memories and an itching for more…

Glenury Royal is one of the few Scotch single malts that I have not been able to try (yet). Your review has made me curious, @Pandemonium. Seems that this is one of those whiskies that are handling the wood influence well. Your description of the palate sounds rather enticing.

@Pierre_W For the price that I paid for it, it'd better.
