About a year ago, I was able to try a Haig Gold Label, albeit rotation 1974. This one is even a decade older, rotation 1964. Today this blend contains 60% grain. The malt part consists of Linkwood and Glenkenchie and others. I have no idea what the recipe looked liked in the Golden Sixties, though.
I get some signs of OBE on the nose, but not that bad that it becomes annoying. Hey, this has been in the bottle for 48 years, mind you. Beneath it you will find nice fruity notes, both red and dark fruits. Nuts. A lot of caramel, almost burnt. A little candid sugar. Soft hint of smoke. Quite nice.
It is light on the palate, extremely sweet and seasoned with a bit of cloves. Some oranges and toffee. It even reminds me a bit of brown rum, like the ones produced by Botrera. Something metal in there as well. Silver polish.
The finish, while surprisingly long, becomes a tad too bitter to my taste.
It is useless to score this one, but let us suffice by saying that it was better then the version from 1974. Much better. Thanks to Ruben for the sample.
