This one is Barrel No. 15-1607, from Rick No. R-4. It was bottled two months ago, on March 31 2015.
The colour is a coppery gold, a shade lighter than 15-0333. Quite closed on the nose (and this bottle has been open for about a month or so), very faint traces of vanilla and caramel and not much else. Obviously, avoid water. Disappointing.
On the palate there is more rye and malt than you would usually get - not as oaky as expected. The usual notes are there but everything is tamer - trace amounts of banana, caramel, liquorice and vanilla - but it is spicier. Weird sour note, though. Water increases the barley sugar.
The finish is dry, chalky and features some late-arriving rye spices. Well, this is quite disappointing - the tamest JD SB imaginable. In fact, this is closer to the inept mixer Gentleman Jack than to even Old No. 7. I'm tasting this one, 15-0333, Master Distiller Series No. 2 and 2014 Holiday Select all side-by-side and it is easily the weakest of the four. Before you buy a Single Barrel, check the number and make sure it's not this one!
