So Jack stood 5' 2". That's the biggest takeaway I got from the story behind this limited edition of the iconic, ubiquitous JD. There have been seven Master Distillers in the history of this Lynchburg distillery, and so seven special bottlings will each honour one of them. This is bottling No. 1, and so honours Jack Daniel himself.

The colour is a deep reddish gold. On the nose, the usual JD profile of deep burnt caramel, cracked black pepper and artificial vanilla - but with a little more oomph. Quite oaky, and sweet with cotton candy. A drop of water adds some wood smoke. Familiar but enjoyable.

On the palate, the vanilla is softer but this countered by more peppery spices. Besides some typical butterscotch, this tastes very much like the usual JD; not terribly complex. But add some water and the spices kick in. Nice.

The finish is medium length, with mild heat and spices. I'm tasting it side by side with Old No. 7 and it is a definite improvement - richer, fuller, deeper. And not much more expensive than Old No. 7. If you like Jack (and most of you on this site certainly do not), then give it a try.

@talexander - thanks for the thumbs up on 1 of 7. I passed on this yesterday; however, in light of your positive review, I think I'll give this one a try.

I wonder if it is more like what Jack Daniel's used to be when it was bottled at 43%, before they changed it and diluted it to 40%?

Let's find a bottle of 86 proof and put them to the test.

I tend to like most bottles of Old no.7. I’ve hit some mediocre ones, some pretty good ones, but never a terrible one. I’m sure many others have had bad JD, but I’ve yet to find an undrinkable bottle. Nice review. I’ve only seen the Jess Gamble near me...

@OdysseusUnbound Buy two JD Single Barrel bottles (from two different barrels, of course) and try them side-by-side. You'll find yourself using the word "subtle" for the first time, in describing Jack Daniel's!
