  • Brand: Kirin Kirin Fuji Gotenba 15 Year old single grain whisky
  • ABV: 43%

Fuji Gotenba distillery was founded in 1972 by Kirin Seagram Ltd. and is located at an altitude of 620 metres above sea level in Gotenba City, about 100 kilometres south-west of Tokyo. Currently the distillery belongs to Kirin Brewery Company Limited, which is owned by Kirin Holdings Company Ltd. Both malt and grain whiskies are produced in Fuji Gotenba, this 15-year old single grain whisky being a distillery exclusive.

The nose is sweet, rich and reminiscent of bourbon: there are distinct flavours of vanilla and fudge, alongside caramel, banana and oaky sweetness. Luscious and mouth watering!

The palate is medium-bodied and just a little bit peppery towards the end. The vanilla and fudge flavours are back, this time together with caramel, some orange peel and more oaky sweetness.

The finish is of medium length and less sweet than both nose and palate. It gets drier towards the end; however the oak is far from taking center stage here.

This is perfectly fine and well balanced stuff, especially at this young age! I don’t know whether the fact that this was distilled in pot stills – in contrast to the column stills traditionally used for producing grain whisky – played a part in bringing forth these flavours. Be that as it may, this single grain whisky is luscious, rewarding, and quite simply a pleasure to drink!
