This young Irish malt is the fourth bottling by the German Limburg Dramclub (they previously bottled a Glenallachie 1999, Clynelish 1997 and a Ledaig 1997). The name of the distillery is nowhere to be found. Quite a mysterious whiskey indeed, very pale and bottled at cask strength.

What a weird nose! At first I get some citrus, but immediately also a chemical sweetness. Candy. Pineapple cubes. Some butter. Garden herbt. Thyme? Something mildly sour as well. And a hint of peat. Adding water offers – do not laugh – plasticine. This might very well be a Connemara in disguise.

It has a stury body with loads of spices. Pepper, ginger, liquorice. The citrus returns on the palate (both grapefruit and lime) and is upholstered with grasses and white fruit. While there is not really a development of smoke, I cannot shake the impression that it is pretty heavily peated. It is very powerful to say the least. Adding water emphasizes the citrus and makes it quite feisty.

The finish is very long on citrus and herbs.

This was quite difficult to judge, I must say. It has something that is both appealing and off-putting. The chemical bit on the nose, hmm. Yep, this is certainly mysterious. But not a stunner in my book.
