Lochside 42 Year Old 1964 Scott’s Selection

This is a single blend. That may sound a bit weird, but when you know that Lochside produced both malt and grain whisky, it may sound not so weird anymore. They were blended at birth, meaning that both the malt and grain spent more than four decades in the same casks.

Oh, that nose is very much like a bourbon. Quite some vanilla, coconut, almonds, milk chocolade. Then the fruit comes out. Light touches of citrus, with oranges in the lead, and loads of spices such as pepper, nutmeg and a pinch of saffron. This has undoubtedly quite a bit of grain whisky in it, but I am not complaining.

It is creamy on the palate and again I feel like I am sipping a bourbon. Loads of oak and then suddenly: kaboom! An explosion of citrus. Lime, lemon, oranges and quite a bit of pink, bittersweet grapefruit. Some black tea, banana and even corn. Halfway through, the wood puts its foot down, with a lot of tannins, cloves and pepper, leaving the mouth completely dry.

The finish is tremendously long, stays warm and spicy.

I really enjoyed this a lot. Put this in front of people blind and they will sure say it is a special, but very pleasant bourbon. Was sold for less than 200 EUR back in the day, which is actually dirt cheap if you think about it. Nowadays, you can hardly find it.
