Lochside 46 Year Old 1965 Adelphi

Just like the Lochside 1964 from Scott’s Selection, this is also a single blend, in which the grain and maltwhisky were brought together in the cask at birth. In this case, the cask is refill sherry butt number 6778 from the Harveys Bodega. This bottling from Adelphi is 46 years old, the oldest Lochside I have tried to date. And the darkest!

Ah, the nose is a sherry bomb, exactly as I had hoped. Furniture polish, polished leather, brown banana, all kinds of berries both red and black. Quite some coconut. Wonderful sherry influence. Coffee, whipped cream included. Raisins on syrup, dried prunes. Mon Cherie bonbons. From the spice cabinet I remember eucalyptus and nutmeg. Even some broth. The cherry on the cake is a wonderful trace of smoke.

On the palate, I am first reminded of rum (the aged quality stuff, mind you). Very spicy with loads of tannins from the cask. Sherry bomb, like I said. Very fruity and syrupy. Candied sugar, liquorice, lemon grass, orange peel. Does not need water, despite the high ABV.

The long and spicy finish brings back to those typical Mon Cherie bonbons to the mind’s eye.

This is truly a feast for the senses! It won a gold medal at the Malt Maniac Awards 2011. Rightfully so! Not cheap, though. Around 350 to 400 EUR. But what a whisky!
