Nose: Red berries and malt. Very obvious red (fruity) wine influence. Jammy and some fudge. Smoke in small quantities, bags of oranges - juice and sweet zest, almost as from some flan dessert. Twigs and a few briney notes. Ginger and pepper. Chocolate in weak coffee. Eventually something butyric and warm - a presence that grows. Not quite sure whether it's from the fruit or malt.

Palate: Warm and smokier/waxier. Malt and fudge with usual red wine notes. Leather and varnish. Acrid and a lightly farmy quality in the background. Bitter oak. Espresso after a custard. Red fruit is again in there, but rather buried by the dark and bitter. Lots of ginger, chili, and pepper.

Finish: Very interesting, though also rather disjointed. I liked some of the wine influence, the execution just wasn't all there. Good chocolate-coffee and a drop or two of cherry extract. The spiciness gives some warmth, too. Promising, though it falls short for me, and what was with the butyric nose?
