The Glengarry Cask Owners, the club around the Belgian whiskyguru Bob Minnekeer, bottled this Port Charlotte after 11 years of maturation on a sherry cask. It was distilled on 18 July 2001 and bottled on 12 July 2012 making is six days shy of 12 years old. Hence I am quite surprised to find the label stating that this is a 10 Year Old.

Caramel candy, fresh dades and farmer butter; those are the things that stand out in this very creamy nose. Then a drop of balsamic and cough syrup follow, even some coffee. Nuts! Something umami, like gravy. The maritime elements are hardly recognizable, really. Surprising.

On the palate, the peat and salt immediately emerge. The fight their way through the sherry influences, although those are still clearly on top. Nice combination that works well. Midpalate, the sherry turns a bit dry and clear signs of oak shine through. Green tea left too long. Liquorice. Nutmeg.

The long, spicy finish is the perfect continuation of the palate.

Atypical, that is the least you can say of this bottling. The sherry cask was very active indeed. But I am not complaining.
