Port Ellen 25 Year Old 1982 Douglas Laing Old & Rare

The Platinum Selection from Douglas Laing is also known as Old & Rare. This Port Ellen has been bottled about six years ago, before that it had matured for a quarter century.

Smoke and citrus, those are the two main aromas that I get on this creamy nose. Then something that reminds me of Mandarine Napoléon (Belgian mandarin liqueur), softly spiced on pepper and a drop of olive oil. The peat is soft and sweet. Just a few maritime elements, like a sea breeze. Fresh.

Very oily and salty on the palate, before the fruit kicks in. Mandarins, again, but also yellow and blue plums. Caramel and black pepper. Salty liquorice, mildly drying. The peat is more pronounced now. The higher ABV gives it quite a bit of punch.

The finish lasts very long and keeps a perfect balance between the salty, smoky character of Port Ellen with the sweet and dry elements of the sherry cask. It is even a little bit zesty.
