Nose: very light, insubstantial. Wet stone, hint of caramel, and oddly, something vaguely meaty. Rather like a more subdued Alberta Premium, but with a slight herbaceous undercurrent, as though a drop of gin has been added to the blend.

Taste: medium-bodied, bigger than the nose would suggest. Still light on flavour, though. "Honey and spice" would sum up the character of this whiskey, but the honey is not very sweet, and the spices indistinct. That hard, flinty quality is the most noticeable component here. Still, it is not a bad-tasting whiskey. I'd say the texture offers more than the taste. With some blended whiskies it is the warmth and smoothness of the mouthfeel which rewards the consumer; this is one such whiskey.

Finish: not a lot going on here.

Balance: Powers Gold picks up extra points for managing to be dangerously drinkable despite its lack of distinct character.
