Description: a 10yo, 1997 vintage edition from 2008, bottled at cask strength, waxy texture in the glass and fruity at first glance.

Nose: a mixed floral/fruity nose, main notes of barley, gooseberry, citrus, lavender and shoe polish, with a touch of mint (with water added: a more mineral bouquet, where the berry’s savor becomes more prominent, but the most noticeable addition is the aura of wood stain and peat)

Mouth: oily, dry and nutty, with peat smoke, roasted chestnuts, leather, pinch of sea salt on the palate with a touch of chocolate crumbles. (with water added: a more traditional farmy palate, like we’ve learned to expect from Springbank)

Finish: long and drying with notes from worn out oak and a touch of orange.

Verdict: a satisfying, clean dram by Springbank. The nutty character reminds of a Hazelburn, but the lightly peated and farm profile makes this a true son of Springbank. Clear winner, well within the contours of the traditional Springbank.

Nice. I'd love to get some of that cask strength farmy action.

Was this a bottle for duty free / travel retail / airport whatevers? This looks like the 1997 bottles I saw there a few years ago before I knew what was what. I haven't seem them there for quite a while now, and I really wish I hadn't missed the boat.

Not sure if it was part of the travel retail range at some point, it could well be. I found a bottle of an old former duty free HP 16yo, in the same shop.
