Gordon & Macphail is the only bottler that brings out semi-official releases of Strathisla, the most picturesque distillery in Speyside. No less than 155 bottlings to date, going back to 1937! We are fortunate enough to try a 50 Year Old from 1957! That is correct: 1957. Yep, this is liquid history. We will take our time for this one.

Ooh, fruit bomb on the nose! Wonderful figs, apricots, oranges, quince, overripe Pink Lady apples and rum raisins. Be sure to add pomegranate and dades to that. The whole is drenched in a wonderful dark honey. Beeswax. Creamy stuff, almost syrupy. After a few moments some nuts and chocolate appear, albeit in the background. Pine cones and a twig of mint! Man, what a nose!

On the palate, it remains wonderfully fruity, but the oak becomes quite loud and a tad bitter. Liquorice and Seville oranges. Some fruit tea. Nice balance, since the fruit remains juicy enough to keep it delicious. Mostly the raisins and apricots shine through. The spices are cinnamon and cloves. The mint from the nose returns on the palate as well. Very nice!

Surprisingly long finish on oak and mildly bitter oranges.

Top dram, do not doubt it! You must try this. It is one of the best Strathisla I have ever had the fortune of tasting.
