I tried this Tamnavulin at the end of last year in Ghent and found it quite excellent. So I am very happy to have been able to score a sample to retry it in the quiet of my tasting room. After 40 long years of maturation it still has an ABV of 40,6%.

Soft, round and honeysweet nose. Quince, marzipan, vanilla, oranges. The vanilla becomes louder all the time, making it sweeter still, without turning into a candy store. Evolves towards apple cake with some floral notes along the way. Heather? Just a touch of oak. Very nice!

It starts sweet, fruity, but mostly very spicy. Ginger and cinnamon, but also some white pepper. Then marzipan and oranges kick in. The whole is wonderfully sweet and clean, but certainly not without body. The oak is a touch louder, but remains under controle. Vanilla and cake return.

The finish is wonderfully warm and long on vanilla and ginger.

Fantastic Tamnavulin that you really ought to try at a tasting, for a bottle will set you back around 500 EUR. Ouch!
