Poitin or poteen is also referred to as moonshine. The distillation and consumption was banned in 1661, but nowadays many distillers market their new make. This Teeling Poitin is a mix of 80% triple distilled corn spirit and 20% double distilled malt spirit. It is bottled at a whopping 61,5% ABV.

The nose is very clean (doh!), but fruity from the outset. Berries, mostly. I get a big spiciness as well. And something that reminds me of sour dough. Nice character.

The attack is very spicy and powerful (doh!). The alcohol makes it quite hot. But surprisingly complex for an unaged spirit. Berries, sugared lemon peel and nuts. How nice!

The finish is very long and spicy – quite creamy too. It becomes honeysweet at the death.

Lovely, lovely spirit!

Just saw this. I tried searching before I did my review but I spelled it differently. Darn! I wanted to be the first to review it on the site!
