Drinking whiskey is not only about nosing and tasting. Some brands have very curious or even mysterious background stories. Last week I ran into one of those strange fellows, a bottle of four-year-old Kentucky Straight bourbon, bought at a specialized liquor store chain in coastal Texas for less than $10. Oh, please, my connosr friends, don’t frown, cheap is not necessarily bad. On the label: Tom Sims, aged four years, especially selected and bottled by Thomas W. Sims Distillery, Bardstown, KY. There ain’t no distillery with that name (?). The only reference that I found on Mr. Sims’s business is a Vintage McCoy Apollo Missile Decanter from 1968 on eBay. Some blogs and posts tell me that Tom Sims is commercialized by Heaven Hill. A few years ago there was even a six-year-old version on the market.
Nose: raisin, sweet corn, some marzipan and toffee, slightly (very slightly) toasty. Taste: initially untypically earthy and dry, then buttery, but a tad thin Finish: taste is quickly fading away, but leaves a nice feeling on the palate.
In conclusion, inoffensive and easily quaffable, no big fuzz. I wonder how the six-year –old is. Anyone of connosr.com who could provide further details?
@sailorman, thanks for an interesting review. I've never seen nor tasted Tom Sims bourbon. It is certainly common, though, for bourbons from independent bottlers to have come from Heaven Hill distillery, because Heaven Hill produces a large percentage of the secondary market bourbon.
