I only recently got to know Tomintoul, early 2012, and immediately became a fan, especially of the older distillates from 1967 and 1969. Like this one: a 42 Year Old Tomintoul from 1969. Will he be able to join the ranks of the amazing Tomintoul 1969 for the Whiskyman that we tried recently?

It is very tropical and juicy on the nose. Candies of pineapple, coconut and vanilla. Some melon, too, drenched in honey. Not as complex as the 1969 from TWM, but nevertheless a stunning nose. A splash of furniture wax makes it soft and smooth. Mint takes care of a nice lift.

It caresses the tongue gently (although it could do with a little more body) in an explosion of citrus fruit. Some malt and sappy oak. Pepper, cinnamon and ginger from the spice cabinet. Nice, nice, nice!

In the medium long, drying finish, it suddenly shows a bitter oaky side. Not unexpected after 42 years, but too sharp to match that aforementioned Tomintoul.

This is a great, if not overly complex and light Tomintoul. Only 60 bottled were released for around 160 EUR. It is also interesting to know that they have just launched their Fourth Release, consisting of the following: Macduff 2000, Glen Ord 1997, Glen Scotia 1992, Ardmore 1992, Bunnahabhain 1990, Coal Ila 1982 and (drumrolls please!) a North British Single Grain from 1962, a full 50 years old, but less than 150 EUR.
