Old Weller Antique 7 Year Old

Bottle from Master of Malt.

Colour is a nice clear bright reddish/light brown. Oily but looks light in the glass.

Nose is big, hot and complex. Can't get my nose right in the glass. Little too strong. Back off a bit and there's some really nice stuff going on. Caramel, muscovado sugars, grape, vinous notes all rolling in at the front. Muscovado sugars and caramels are deep and rich. Toffee. Banana and Banoffi Pie. Lots of sweetness. Candy sugar, floral, palma violets, cherry wood, little tobacco. Few sniffs later and there's some red berry fruit. Strawberry, banana again, cherry. This keeps giving. Have been sitting here 15 mins just enjoying the aroma. Cut plant stems. Wood coming through now.

Okay, let's taste this. At the front there's a lot of alcohol, but it doesn't burn. Softens down to spices, caramels, muscovado sugars, tobacco, wood, sour cherry, cigar ash. A lot of spice. Flavours a little more muted than the nose, and harder to get past the alcohol. Harder to pick out. Dark fruits. Raisin, fruit cake. Wood coming through at the end.

Finish lingers, some tobacco and wood char, caramel.

@ewhiskey

The nose of this Bourbon was very surprising, and would be for any Bourbon. Very light and mellow, and since Bourbon is always aged in first fill casks, I usually expect intensity over zen. Cool bruised red grapes will intrigue you and you will be refreshed by frozen sugar cane. It's mild aromas make 107 proof unconvincing. Deceivingly dangerous.

Buttery caramel with a dust of super fine salt ballet the palate, Pure strawberry water with a sweet mapley char. A light scotch dessert.

A light but slightly oily body,

The finish is long but plateaued with sweet earthiness.

Amazing value!

Forget the gimmicks of age and name, trust the vendor and be astounded by simplicity and greatness.

Nose: Brown Sugar, Licorice, Candied Orange, the slightest hints of Oak, Lavender, Caramel, Grain, 90% Cocoa Dark Chocolate, Honey, Sauteed Apples dusted with Cinnamon, Dried Mango.

Palate: Oak, Dried fruits, here come the Apples and the Mangos. Very spicy right after a sweet entry. Intense spice, lots of grip and heat. This body is huge! Now once it settles down, Vanilla, Lavender, Oak, Honey, Cinnamon, Brown Sugar. These all sit wonderfully on your tongue but, you have to chew to get them out.

Finish: Hot and warming going down. Vanilla again, Oak, Honey Comb now, Licorice, Caramel, Dark Chocolate. Leaves the mouth dry and Grippy.

Intense and engaging Nose, Big body, Multifaceted palate, and a good, long finish. Is there anything more you could want? Probably another glass.

I like this one. Its full of flavor although it is rough that's part of its charm I dare you to drink a full shot of it and not cough afterwards.

I don't usually take offense to low reviews but this one has no basis. "I dare u to take a full shot and not cough." What kind of review is this? Besides the fact this is a great whiskey. This review gives absolutely no explanation of the score besides the whiskey being "powerful." Please in the future justify your scoring with more than I did a shot at the bar with some friends and it made me cough or it was smooth.

Since they had to deal with the title "Antique," the bottlers chose the ancient parchment, faux script font, line drawings of the founder and simulated stained edging around the label -- much like bad repro confederate mone.

No matter-- if I was marooned on a desert island and was offered the choice of either a sexy companion or a handle of this stuff, i would take the whiskey hands down.

Sophisticated, intense, smoky, mysterious, warm, comforting, virile (paging doctor Freud) and caramel-chocolate candy tinged-- Old Weller Antique never fails to make me smile.(sometimes until I just pass into blissful sleep and comforting dreams of my childhood--though I wasn't a drinker in my childhood)

Try it---TRY IT! ( Luke, come over to the dark side)

Great review @Maestroso! I just picked up a bottle in Michigan and the labelling, much to your liking I will presume, has been simplified and scaled back significantly. The parchment look now only occupies a quarter of the main part of the bottle (roughly the same space where the three or four lines of fine script is shown at the bottom of the label on the bottle pictured in this review), with 'Old Weller Antique' in white script on the clear glass above the parchment section. In that sense, the labelling seems to be closer in style to the William Larue Weller bottles. I can't wait to try the Weller Antique soon...likely next weekend.

@Maestroso, the Old Weller Antique 107 is indeed lovely, full-flavoured bourbon, one of the few wheated bourbons with a strong flavour profile. I have long been a big fan of it myself. I don't see William Larue Weller in your cabinet. The annual release will be available in October. If you are a Weller Antique fan you will want some William Larue Weller in your cabinet.
