A review of Weymss Malts "Cream of Islay" Caol Ila 15 year old single cask (390 bottles from a hogshead). I'm not sure to what they were referring when they named it "Cream of Islay". Could it be that the bottlers meant that it is the cream of the crop, so to speak, of Islay malts? Or do they refer to the rich mouthfeel? Or perhaps that we should find creamy notes in the whisky? It's a mystery won't never be solved.....

This, however, is another whisky that in my opinion requires water for maximum enjoyment.

Nose: initially dry smoke, ashy, astringent campfire. With water, soft smoke, ash, and vanilla.

Palate: rich and oily. Billowing dry smoke, vegetal. With water, much creamier (there it is!). Smoke suspended in honey-water.

Finish: dry and prolonged, with a hint of sweetness. Much the same with water, though the dry smoke is somewhat softer.

Cream of the Campfire, more like it. Water makes both the nose and palate much "creamier" by softening some of the astringency. An enjoyable rendition of Caol Ila, but not quite what I am accustomed to from this distillery. My other Caol Ila experiences I can characterize as more subtle, rich, and sweet.
