Wild Turkey Russells Reserve 10 Year Old

No whisky is more "what you see, what you get" than Russell's 10 year old. The palate matches the nose almost perfectly, there are no surprises here. Whilst its not the most exciting bourbon, it is - in my opinion - by far the best bang for your buck and will not fail to disappoint. Its the first bourbon I reach for when I want something to enjoy but don't have the time or focus to analyse it.

Nose: powerful and loud, no subtlety. Strong notes of tobacco, leather, spice, ripe pears and freshly cut pine. A little vanilla sweetness (more with water added)

Palate: is much the same as the nose, its an easy whisky to grasp but certainly NOT one dimensional. Stronger tobacco and leather spice come through, very little sweetness. Quite drying with a little hint citrus. Adding water thins it out a bit and give a more oily mouthfeel.

Finish: long without water and medium with. Fresh tobacco leafs and dryness linger.

Overall I don't think you can go wrong with this bourbon, it's bottled at 45%, packs a strong punch but remains sophisticated. I think it's hard to find a better value and better quality bourbon at $60AUD. I referred to it as an Islay because of the dominating tobacco note with is America's peat.

@whiskyshaver, thanks for your nice review. It will be interesting to see how long the age statement will last on the Russell's Reserve products. They are disappearing pretty much everywhere else.

That is nice that Australia seems to get a very good distribution of Wild Turkey products.

If you like this one, try the RR Single Barrel. It will knock your socks off! I keep the WT "Trinity" around at all times; 101, Rare Breed and RR Single Barrel. Great stuff!

This is an interesting expression of Wild Turkey in that it only differs in age and strength. This cost approximately $36 compared to its younger brother at $22. I would stick with youth. Nose: Apple skin, candied citrus, sweet, stewed tea, cinnamon candy, nutmeg, clove and vanilla apple cider vinegar. Taste: light brown sugar, acetone, charred wood, over cooked caramel bordering on burnt sugar, spicy cinnamon Finish: bitter, raw cocoa, long, has a strong oak presence with a heavy rye finish.

Wild Turkey is distilled and bottled by Austin Nichols & Co., a division of the Campari Group. Russell's Reserve was first released in 2001 as a Wild Turkey line extension, named in honor of veteran Wild Turkey Master Distiller Jimmy Russell. This is the original expression, 10 years old and bottled at 101° proof (50.5% ABV), and not to be confused with the currently available version that is bottled at 90° proof (45% ABV).

The nose is rich and fruity. Vanilla and honey are the dominant flavours, followed by peach and syrup. A whiff of smoke rounds this off, together with some tobacco.

The palate is full-bodied, spicy and chewy. Vanilla is back again, together with fudge and raisins.

The finish is of medium length and warming. Towards the end it gets rather dry and woody.

Less bold and assertive than the other expressions of the Wild Turkey line-up, this is a bourbon that I greatly enjoyed. Both nose and palate are very well balanced, and I particularly enjoyed the mix of fruity elements such as vanilla/peach with the more austere flavours of smoke/tobacco. Well done – a true gentleman!
